Scope:
The Director of Accounting is responsible for managing the financial operations of the church. This includes overseeing accounting, budgeting, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, staff benefits, and insurance. The role ensures accurate financial record keeping, supports ministry needs, and helps maintain the financial health of the church through sound practices and procedures.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably in a church or non-profit setting
- Familiarity with accounting software (Blackbaud preferred)
- Understanding of church / non-profit financial practices, fund accounting, and donor tracking
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to handle sensitive information
- Advanced MS Excel skills
- A personal commitment to the mission and values of the church
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Manage all day-to-day accounting functions including general ledger, bank reconciliations, and journal entries
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for church leadership and committees
- Maintain organized and accurate financial records in accordance with accepted accounting principles
Budgeting & Financial Procedures
- Help prepare the annual church budget in collaboration with ministry leaders and pastors
- Monitor actual income and expenses against the budget and report variances as needed
- Ensure financial policies and procedures are followed by staff and ministry teams
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Process vendor invoices and payments in a timely manner
- Track incoming donations, fees, and other revenues, ensuring proper documentation and donor intent
- Maintain accurate records for contributions and prepare giving statements as needed
- Oversee the regular collection of congregational donations as well as the safe transport of deposits to the bank
Payroll & Staff Benefits
- Oversee payroll processing, including time tracking, tax withholding, and direct deposits
- Manage employee benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off
- Serve as the point of contact for benefit providers and assist staff with questions
- Collaborate with and advise the Human Resources team, as requested, on any and all matters related to employee benefits
Insurance & Risk Management
- Maintain church insurance policies, including liability, property, and workers’ compensation
- Work with insurance providers on renewals and claims, ensuring appropriate coverage is in place
Compliance & Support
- Ensure compliance with IRS and state reporting requirements for churches and non-profits
- Attend meetings of the Finance Committee and support with financial data, reports, and minutes
- Respond to financial questions or requests from church staff, volunteers, or vendors
- Coordinate financial aspects of the annual audit
All-Staff Events
- Attend weekly and monthly staff meetings
- Participate to help put on events such as Christmas, Easter, and VBS that require full-staff participation
